I am still having periods - can I still be seen in the menopause clinic?

The menopause occurs one year after a woman’s last menstrual period. Many women experience perimenopausal symptoms for several years before their periods stop. If you are experiencing perimenopausal symptoms which are having a negative impact on the quality of your life, then it is likely you will benefit by being given individualised advice and treatment from one of the clinicians in our clinic. This could include starting you on hormones .

How often will I need to be seen?

We encourage appointments to be rebooked again around three months after your initial appointment. Sometimes then after 6 months and for an annual review.

How much will the HRT medication cost?

Women who are likely to benefit from taking HRT are usually given a private prescription for the first few months. You can then continue to have HRT as a private prescription from The Hormone Centre or ask your GP to continue the prescription on the NHS. Any private charges for writing a prescription are included at your initial consultation. Repeat prescriptions will be charged £37. Costs for a month's supply of HRT will vary depending on the type of medication prescribed, but varies is around £14 per item. Testosterone is more expensive at £80 for a tube of cream that will last around 3-4 months. Please note that your chosen pharmacy will issue a prescription dispensing fee for each prescription which differs from pharmacy to pharmacy. You can opt for us to send your prescription to our trusted online pharmacy provider who can send your medications out by delivery via DPD. If we issue a prescription to the online pharmacy and you pay for it by 3 pm, your medication can be delivered on a free next-day service.

How long does it take for HRT to work?

Response times do vary for women once they start HRT. Some women find they feel better quickly whereas for other women it can take three months to feel the full effects. We ask that with any treatment you are given you allow three months before deciding how it suits you. Some women do develop breast tenderness initially which often settles. Some women do experience some bleeding which usually settles within the first few months. During your follow-up appointment, if you are still experiencing symptoms your consultant may decide that the dose or type of HRT needs to be changed.

How long does a consultation last?

We ask patients to allow 90 minutes in total, this may be over 2 visits depending on appointments. We ensure that there is adequate time during a consultation for women to explain their situation and be given individual advice and choices regarding treatment, including HRT.

Do you see patients from overseas?

We can only see patients from overseas if they are in the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man for their appointment. Patients who are domiciled outside the United Kingdom, Channel Islands or the Isle of Man can be seen either in The Hormone Centre or via a video or phone consultation whilst in the UK at the time of their appointment. Patients who were domiciled in the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man at the time of their initial treatment but have now moved overseas can either attend The Hormone Centre for follow up appointments or participate remotely by telephone or video link whilst in the UK at the time of their initial appointment.

Do you prescribe testosterone?

Testosterone is an important hormone, and many women find that using testosterone can improve their symptoms of menopause. To date, there is no licensed preparation of testosterone available for women in the UK. At The Hormone Centre, our doctors can prescribe testosterone where it is clinically indicated.
